Ingredients
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 30 minutes
Total Time: 35 minutes
Yield: About 2Β½ cups (20 servings at 2 Tbsp each)
- 1Β½ cups tomato ketchup
- Β½ cup apple cider vinegar
- ΒΌ cup Worcestershire sauce
- ΒΎ cup packed light brown sugar
- 2 tbsp yellow mustard
- 1 tbsp paprika (or smoked paprika for deeper flavor)
- 2 tsp onion powder
- 1 tsp ground black pepper (or to taste)
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- Β½ cup water
Instructions
Step 1: Combine All Ingredients
In a medium saucepan, combine all ingredients and whisk together until well combined and the brown sugar is mostly dissolved.
Step 2: Bring to a Boil
Place over medium-high heat and bring to a boil, stirring occasionally. Watch carefully β once it starts boiling, reduce the heat immediately.
Step 3: Simmer and Thicken
Lower the heat to medium-low and simmer uncovered for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. The sauce will reduce and thicken significantly. Stir more frequently during the last 10 minutes to prevent sticking.
Step 4: Taste and Adjust
- Too tangy? Add 1β2 tbsp more brown sugar
- Too sweet? Add a splash more vinegar
- Need more depth? Add a pinch more paprika or garlic powder
- Want more kick? Add a dash of cayenne or hot sauce
Step 5: Cool and Store
Remove from heat and cool completely. Transfer to a clean glass jar and refrigerate. Keeps for up to 2 weeks.
Step 6: Rest for Best Flavor
You can use right away, but the sauce tastes best after a 1-hour rest in the refrigerator. The flavors meld and develop more complexity as it sits!

Tips for Success
Use quality ketchup: The ketchup is the base, so use a brand you like.
Fresh garlic is best: Freshly minced garlic adds so much more flavor than garlic powder.
Watch the heat: Keep it at a gentle simmer, not a rolling boil.
Stir regularly: Especially toward the end to prevent burning on the bottom.
Smoked paprika upgrade: Swap regular paprika for smoked paprika to add subtle smoky depth!
Make it ahead: This sauce keeps for 2 weeks, so make a batch on Sunday and use it all week!

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use regular sugar instead of brown sugar?
You can, but brown sugar adds molasses flavor and richness. If substituting, use white sugar + 1 tbsp molasses.
How long does it last?
Up to 2 weeks in the refrigerator in an airtight container.
Can I freeze it?
Yes! Freeze in ice cube trays or small containers for up to 3 months.
Why is my sauce too thin?
Simmer it longer! It thickens significantly as it cooks and also as it cools.
